2010 Twisted and Intertwined

The title of the brief was Twisted and intertwined. I began by producing some ink sketches of hands that were 'twisted and intertwined'/interlocked. The mark making was chosen with inspiration from Gerald Scarfe's illustrations.

These are the prints of a dry point etching. The technique was thought of, firstly to produce a strong image of linear lines that could be repeated and worked over, and also from looking at Ralph Steadman's etchings. His work has imperfections in the form of blotches of ink on the print, so i have used a similar idea to create imperfections of my own.

I have used colour, both in the form of the ink applied directly to the etching and over the top of a monochromatic print, to explore themes of colour i could look into later in the project.

Ive gone back to sketching, this time using charcoal to emphisize tonal qualities in the hands.

Again emphisis on tonal qualities, but in colour using watercolour which is softer colouring and blending in contrast to the dark heavy lines produced by the charcoal.

Re-visiting the use of ink, developing a more complex image, with multiple hands intertwined, gradually developing into colour, incorportating both Ralph Steadman's imprefections on the page, and Gerald Scarfe's sketchy illustations.

Same image, but using techniques of colour and shading from Edward Ardizzone.

As i was looking at illustrators, i decided to find a text to illustrate that linked to both the twisted and intertwined and the theme of hands. I found a quote from Carol Ann Duffy's poem Moments of Grace
'Now i take off my watch, let a minute unravel in my hands,'
